How to Maximize Your Next Few Public Holidays

Wow, is this year fast or what? It’s already June and that means there are only five more public holidays to go.

None of the public holidays left fall on a Saturday so no more off in-lieu (for those who are entitled to it) but the good news is, 3 out of the 5 public holidays fall on a Friday/Monday so yay, long weekend trips! The other 2 public holidays (National Day and Deepavali) fall on a Wednesday so with careful planning, you can still make very good use of it.

So, let’s do a stock take of the public holidays left:

#1. 26 June 2017, Sun

Since the public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday (i.e. 26 June) will become the public holiday – which means, yay long weekend! Since this long weekend is just 2 weeks away, it means a short trip to anywhere that requires air tickets will be too expensive. So unless, you are feeling rich, here are some tips to maximize this PH:

• Plan a 2D1N trip to Johor Bahru/Malacca/Kuala Lumpur (rates are still affordable now!)
• Too lazy to cross the causeway? Book a staycation or some cooking/drawing/you-get-what-we-mean classes so you make the most of out this long weekend

Ah, wouldn’t it be nice if the government decides to grant us one more public holiday this year for SG51?

Since the public holiday falls on a Wednesday, it means you probably can’t go anywhere without taking additional 2 days leave. But even if you do have 2 days leave to spare, why would you want to go anywhere when you can be spending time at home with your extended family/friends watching the fireworks? (Ah, we Singaporeans are such suckers for fireworks :x)

Yes! Another long weekend. Since this long weekend is a good 2-3 months away, you need to start booking your air tickets right away – especially if you are planning a short getaway to Bangkok/Hong Kong because everyone else is trying to go on a trip without taking leave too. :p

Otherwise, nothing like a short trip to Johor Bahru where everything feels soooo affordable.

#4. 18 October 2017, Wed

Before you let out a disappointing sigh that this public holiday is on a Wednesday, let us remind you that October is one of the best time to take your big trips before the weather turns too cold! So, if you are planning a Europe/USA holiday, it’s best to invest your leave in this month.

Just imagine, if you take 4 days’ leave on 16, 17, 19, and 20 Oct, you’ll have essentially 9 days for your trip.

By the way, 9 days is a good length for a Japan or South Korea trip 😉

What is missing in this calendar is that 1 January 2018 (Monday) is also a public holiday – and guys, this is the main reason why end December is such a popular period to take leave. So, if you haven’t applied for leave, or worse still, you haven’t even booked your air tickets/accommodation, you need to do it VERY soon!

If you take 4 days leave from 26 – 29 Dec, you will have 10 days for your trip.

4 days leave for a 10-day trip? Shiok. But please remember to shop for your winter clothing as well because it’s gonna get really cold – which we secretly enjoy.

So there we go, the 5 public holidays left for the year and if there’s one thing you should remember, it would be: please book your air tickets and accommodation asap so you get the cheapest fares. Itinerary-planning can wait. 😉

My parents think I travel too much but if not now, then when? New experiences excite me the most and that's why I rarely visit the same city twice unless (a) they have awesome food and (b) they have awesome food.
