4 friendly graduation trip reminders

One of the best things about graduation is the graduation trip! We’ve been through it — so many places in the world, so little time. Should we go with this group of friends? Should I go alone? Should I even go at all? Here are 4 friendly reminders for planning an epic grad trip you deserve.

Reminder 1: Go where nobody goes, even if it means going alone

So you want to go to somewhere exotic, but no one wants to. This grad trip could be the biggest trip of your life so far (those weekend JB road trips do not count), so why not do as your heart’s wish? It could be backpacking Europe, or scaling mountains in Nepal.

If you like to inject a bit of meaning to your travels (also makes it easier explaining to others when they ask “why you so exotic one?”) — go on an Earthwatch Expedition with research scientists. Travel the globe while helping to save the planet.

Reminder 2: Think about the number of days you want to travel, and double it

Truth is, the next time you have such extended length of freedom is probably three to six years in the future. Welcome to adulthood. Before you take the plunge, take a big fat good trip you’d be proud of. I have heard fair share of stories from those who did not take a grad trip, and never quite forgiven themselves so. Work and commitment can consume you (and your adventurous spirit) — fly high while you’re young and free.

Reminder 3: Eat, explore and sleep like a local

Don’t be a tourist, be a traveller. This sets the tone for all your travels hereafter. You’re young and dangerous, be young and dangerous. Eat that crazy thing the locals are all queuing for, go to places instead of rushing around ticking off tourist’s hotspots checklist (been there done that regretted it).

And if you’re a solo backpacker, try couch-surfing or hostels (meet new people around the world – great for networking). AirBnB is a superb way to get yourself in a local’s house too!

Reminder 4: Plan your trip as early as NOW to save money!

I know you’re super busy with lectures, tutorials, FYP… and distractions like travel blogs. Give yourself a day to make all the major travel plans such as booking just return flights from Singapore, and domestic trains or planes or boats, if any. Pick a place to stay for the first 3 nights, and that’s it — voila, you’re good to go! Finnair is having super cheap return flights offers to places in Europe such as Barcelona and Prague. Only 799SGD! Save on these big-ticket items (flights, domestic transportation) and have a little more dough for longer travels!
