Affordable, peaceful and well-located homestay in Ubud

We have a secret and we’re letting you in — D’Cliff Homestay, the best homestay in Ubud!

Nope, this is not an ad. I’ve lived here for two full weeks and loved it. Staying at D’Cliff will be gentle on your wallet (holla, backpackers!), tranquil and safe (namaste, peace seekers!), and you’re right smack in the heart of Ubud!

No. 21 Jalan Goutama Selatan 80571

Location: In the heart of Ubud

Jalan Goutama is a small, understated hippie street in Ubud. In the day, locals go about their own business and travellers laze around in quaint cafes and quirky shops that line the street. By night, Jalan Goutama transforms into a bustling quaint alley lit by the glow of eclectic cafes, jazzy music and good vibes only.

  • 20 steps walk to laundry shop (no kidding!)
  • Motorbike rental and tour shop at your doorstep
  • 15 minutes walk to two popular yoga studios, Yoga Barn and Radiantly Alive
  • Nearby popular local food: Puspa’s Warung, Warung Biah Biah, Dewa Warung and Warung Lokal
  • Health-conscious cafes: Soma Cafe, The Seeds of Life, Kismet, Down to Earth Cafe & Market
  • Tucked behind the bustling Jalan Hanouman where you’ll find Clear Kafe, Atman Cafe, Kafe, yoga shops, minimarts

Atmosphere: Secured and peaceful

Essentially, you’ll be staying in the awesome backyard of a peace-loving family. Made and Ilo have three young children who are super adorable, shy and polite. They have just finished building this 3-level homestay on a hill slope last year. I lived on the topmost level, and the other two are at the bottom of the tiny slope. Made shared that the best rooms are located at the middle level, though I much preferred mine because of the good sun and panoramic view of the forested backyard.

  • Loving family of three kids and grandparents
  • Wake up to chirping birds and the rush of river sounds
  • View of swaying trees, dancing birds and a small river at your balcony
  • Privacy of room facing the forest (I was topless in my room and felt entirely safe about it)
  • Private shed for residents to park their motorbikes
  • Tucked in a lively street, the walk home late at night felt extremely safe (I have stayed elsewhere where the walk home was pitch dark with dogs barking)

Comfort: Clean sheets, fresh air and hot showers

I love the fresh cool air of Ubud. Because Ubud is located on a higher altitude in Bali, the night and dawn air is crispy and smells like fresh oxygen. Ubud, however gets busier over these couple of years and there is increasing noise and air pollution by cars and buses. In the good old days, there were none! At D’Cliff, you can still enjoy fresh air from the forest in the backyard (sleep with your balcony doors slightly open, though watch out for mozzies). There’s no air-conditioner, but you won’t need one.

  • Night and dawn air as cool as air-con, but fresher
  • Clean sheets, puffy pillows, thick blankets, queen-sized bed
  • Hot showers at anytime of the day (In one other homestay, the shower water was brown)
  • Strong flush
  • Solid wooden closet and vanity table
  • Warm orange night lamps that set the mood to slow down before bedtime
  • Squeaky clean floors (I’ve stayed in three other homestays, and I can’t say the same for them)
  • Big towel provided

You can find D’Cliff Homestay on Booking.com, Agoda.com and AirBnb. Say hi on Facebook too, if you wish. Prices differ across the different platforms, and prices differ during peak and non-peak seasons. If you’re feeling adventurous, go on a backpack and enquire on a walk-in rate. Chances are you’ll receive the best quotes on walk-ins.

The latest rates Made shared with me for walk-ins were single at 150,000idr/night (approx. 15 SGD for one pax) and couple at 200,000idr/night (approx. 20 SGD for two pax). Feel free to drop a comment below if you have more questions!

Anna
Anna lives to explore. She loves digging toes into warm sand, diving, hugging trees, eating with locals, yoga and meditation. She enjoys stuffing her face with good food and prancing through back alleys of urban spaces. Some say Anna lives carelessly, she says "live wild, live carefree."
