Going Seoul: 3G Sim Card or Wifi Router?

When there wasn’t such a thing called wifi router, the first counter I head to after the immigration counter will always be the 3G sim card counter. Don’t judge because I’m sure 9 out of 10 of you reading this are the same!

So, to all data-needy friends out there – do you know that you are not limited to just local 3G sim card and wifi router? Here are your options:

Here are your options:

→ Local 3G sim card
→ Portable Wifi Router
→ Your service provider’s data roaming plan (my pick!)

I’ll review each of them and you can decide which of them works the best for you! I’ll compare them based on cost and data quota since that’s what matters right? 🙂

#1. Local 3G Sim Card

Cost: SGD 45
Data included: 1 GB
Validity: 30 days

The pros:

This is probably the most expensive option but you save the trouble of having to charge the router every night. For heavy data users, there’s the option of topping up another 1GB for 15,000 KRW which works out to be approximately SGD 20.

The cons:

The setting up can take a while and is a little complicated for my liking. If you do not have the spare phone, you’ll also be forced to remove your existing SIM card which can be quite unsettling because you will be constantly worried if you’ll lose your original SIM card.

Where to get it? ChangiRecommends.com

#2. Wifi Router

Cost: SGD 5 per day (ChangiRecommends – promotional) / SGD 6 per day (WifiEgg)
Data included: Unlimited
Validity: Not applicable

The pros:

It’s the most affordable option if you are travelling in groups. Data is unlimited (omg) and can be shared up to 6 devices and according to the spec sheet on the website, battery can last up to 9 hours. The battery life is quite reasonable! Plus, the first day of rental is waived so there’s no “wastage” in that sense.

The cons:

The device has to be charged every night so you have the maximum lifespan the next day and honestly, I really didn’t have the time for that. There’s already the phone, camera and portable charger that I have to charge!

#3. Singtel’s ReadyRoam Package

Cost: SGD 20 (Singtel – promotional)
Data included: 1 GB
Validity: 30 days

The pros:

It’s the MOST fuss-free option because you don’t have to switch your SIM card and it is just half the price of getting a local SIM card! Moreover, the ReadyRoam package allows you to use the same 1GB data for 11 countries in total. It includes Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea, China, Hong Kong and Indonesia (just to name a few) so it’s super worth it if you are heading to more than 1 country in the same month. Excess data use will be charged at SGD 20 per GB, which is reasonable!

The cons:

This definitely isn’t the cheapest option and since I’m a Singtel user, I’m not sure if M1/Starhub has any similar plans like this?

Where to get it? Through My SingTel app. More info here

My parents think I travel too much but if not now, then when? New experiences excite me the most and that's why I rarely visit the same city twice unless (a) they have awesome food and (b) they have awesome food.
