Your Parents Need A Holiday Too. 5 Destinations They Will Love

Your parents may or may not have brought you to places when you were younger but regardless, they worked hard to make you what you are today (probably sacrificed their own holidays) and they deserve a treat for that!

#1. If your parents appreciate scenery – Jiu Zhai Gou, China

The scenery is stunning – it’s probably how you would imagine a fairyland to look like. Never have I seen water so clear, so turquoise. With incredibly coloured natural lakes among hills and waterfalls, your parents will never be able to forget this amazing landscape.

We wouldn’t recommend to plan your own trip here as Jiu Zhai Gou is a huge place and a guide will be very helpful. Book a tour with renowned tour agencies (but try to opt for a ‘no shopping stops’ tours) as they usually include other gorgeous attractions in the itinerary too! Here’s what we saw en-route to Jiu Zhai Gou.

We paid about $1300/adult for our 8D7N package.

#2. If your parents seek to explore the road less travelled  – Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Angkor Wat wouldn’t be foreign to our parents. It’s the biggest religious monument in the world afterall! But what your parents probably wouldn’t do is to plan a trip there on their own (booking their own flight tickets and accommodation can be a daunting task) so why not surprise them with a trip there?

There are many airlines which flies direct to Siem Reap now and if you want to spend more time in Cambodia, you can fly into Phnom Penh (Cambodia’s capital) and take a 6 – 8 hour bus ride to Siem Reap.

#3. If your parents live to eat  – Hong Kong

From dim sums to Michelin restaurants, there’s definitely something for your foodie parents. We love their cha chaan teng the most for their simple fare. If you haven’t tried, Kam Wah serves amazing pineapple Bun 菠蘿包 and cheesy curry noodles with pork/chicken chop.

Plus, Macau is just a one-hour ferry ride away and your parents can feast on authentic Macanese cuisine over there! Freshly baked Portuguese egg tarts, pork chop buns and baked rice. Are you feeling hungry already?

#4. If your parents love everything about nature – Sapa, Vietnam

Culturally rich with different hilltribe minorities, Sapa and its surrounding region is host to many rice terraces, lush vegetation, and Fansipan, the highest peak in Vietnam. There can’t be a better place to get closer to nature, really.

There are two main ways to get to Sapa: bus and overnight train. We recommend the latter as the roads to Sapa are winding and may not be the best for the elderly. Accommodation options are aplenty but our homestay experience left us feeling warm and fuzzy at the end of the trip.

#5. If your parents can never get tired – Bangkok, Thailand

My parents are like me, we can get never spend days at a beach resort. We need activities, we need shops, we need places to explore. If your parents are the same, we can’t recommend Bangkok more. Their morning markets can start as early as 6am and their night markets can end as late as 12 midnight (or later), you can be sure that your parents will be kept occupied from day to night.

Don’t forget to explore these popular cafes too!

When your parents are finally tired, bring them for a good massage! They are everywhere. A one-hour massage can cost as low as 200 baht, we had one every night because we just can’t resist a SGD 8 massage.

So now, go make your parents happy! 🙂

My parents think I travel too much but if not now, then when? New experiences excite me the most and that's why I rarely visit the same city twice unless (a) they have awesome food and (b) they have awesome food.
